Classicism Marble Park Bench
Item Number gf-1258. Item Number gf-1258Classicism developed in response to the excess of Rococo. With the increasing interest in classical antiquity (Greece and Rome) stimulated by the grand tour and by excavations of Herculaneum (1738) and Pompeii (1748) the style of this time period was rediscovered, which was mainly found in architectural structures. The forms consisted among others besides symmetry and linearity of course of the order of columns, vases, trophies, urns, masks, Sphinxes, Gryphons, intricate decorative lines and meanders. Offered the stately bench, which was inspired by classicism, is a particularly beautiful example, its decorative elements are worked highly artfully. The exquisiteness of the object is also emphasized by the bright Carrara marble. The park bench has been restored and is in good condition with a decorative patina, minor blemishes in certain places. Wear consistent with age and use. Circa 1830
